About “Wanderings”

Filed under: — Steve Hamlin @ 1:05 pm

My intention in starting this site was to provide myself with a platform for my writing, to give potential clients easy access to samples of my writing and to challenge myself to write regularly.

On our trip to Florida in 2005 – the first such trip in fifteen years – my wife Linda prompted me to keep a journal of the trip.  As anyone who has begun a journal will attest, it’s easy to begin, harder to follow through on.  I managed to keep up with it through the entire five-week journey.  Since then, I don’t think I’ve looked at my work more than a couple of times, but it’s there if I want it.

I found through that experience that I enjoyed the process of writing about our travels.  Writing about the trip added depth and enriched the journey in much the same way that teaching somebody else how to do something familiar crystallizes the process in the mind of the teacher as much or more than in the student.

Since that 2005 trip, Linda and I have been fortunate enough to travel quite a lot.  We both enjoy it immensely and our employment situation has given us the flexibility to accommodate it.  We’ve made changes in our lifestyle to increase the portability of our billable work, to incorporate our travels into our business plan, such as it is.

I hope you enjoy my essays.

About Me

I live with my wife Linda, in the rural community of Huntington, in the hilltowns of western Massachusetts. I love history and in my native New England, I’m surrounded by it. I love the scale of New England – in just two or three hours, I can be at either the ocean or in the White Mountains. I love the variety of New England too – not just in its geography, but in its people, its wild life and its weather.
